Selective and Restricted Eating

Understanding how to manage your child’s selective eating behaviours

Do you have a child who has Sensory Sensitivities, Food Anxieties, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder and/or Poor Appetite, and consequently is not a great eater? Are you worried about your child’s nutrient intake and health status?

Some children have feeding and eating difficulties, this can look like:

  • Refusal of family meals
  • Refusal of fruit, vegetables and / or protein foods
  • Distress and tantrums when offered new foods to try
  • Preference for milk rather than whole food
  • The ability to go all day without eating
  • Preference for single textured foods and food to be separated on their plate
  • Strong preference for specific brands of foods

If your child is experiencing these difficulties, then you will benefit from an appointment. An consultation with Melanie will provide you with practical strategies to manage your child’s feeding difficulties.

How I can help

I am highly experienced in the management of Problem Feeding and trained in the ‘Sequential-Oral-Sensory (SOS) Approach to Feeding’ program. I have over 10 years of experience working with children with a restricted dietary intake, and I am skilled at implementing strategies from the SOS Approach to Feeding Program to teach children how to introduce new foods into their diet, while being sensitive to their unique challenges.

My goal is to ensure that children are meeting their nutritional requirements while learning how to eat a better variety of food.

I will spend time assessing, and explaining why your child finds it difficult to eat a wide variety of foods and textures from the 5 core food groups.

I will train parents and caregivers to become the Food Therapist in the home environment, with clear strategies and recommendations to help your child progress towards healthier eating habits.

It can be a long and challenging road, but with the right help you can help your child improve their eating habits.
